Thick and Warm, Cozy Toe Socks!

Thick and Warm, Cozy Toe Socks!
Starting at the ankle, these will keep your tootsies warm and cozy!
They may be a little on the thick side to wear inside shoes, but they're great from bumming around the house or even in flip flops!
Currently, these are only available in size 7 1/2 shoe size, however I plan to make larger sizes soon.

What you need:
Needles: Size 3 (3.25mm) dpns (set of 4). A yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Yarn: Something Light weight (sport, or a 3 is good).  I've used Red Heart Comfort Sport.
Other: 2 small stitch holders.  A stitch marker.

Method:
Cast on 48 sts loosely. Divide onto 3 needles: 12-24-12 sts. Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
Work 16 rnds in (K1. P1) ribbing, then knit in rnds until work from beg measures 4"  [10 cm] for ankle socks or 6" [15.5 cm] for above the ankle socks.

Make heel: Divide 24 sts on 2nd needle onto 2 needles and leave for instep. K12 off 1st needle onto end of 3rd needle.
Next row: (WS). P11. P2tog. P11. 23 sts.
Next row: *K1. Sl1. Rep from * to last st. K1.
Next row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows for 2 ins [5 cm], ending with a RS row.

Shape heel: 1st row: P12. P2tog. P1. Turn.
2nd row: K3. Sl1. K1. psso. K1. Turn.
3rd row: P4. P2tog. P1. Turn.
4th row: K5. Sl1. K1. psso. K1. Turn.
Cont in same manner to 13 sts.

Shape instep: With RS of work facing, pick up and knit 12 sts along left side of heel. K24 for instep. Pick up and knit 12 sts along right side of heel. Knit first 7 sts from heel onto end of 3rd needle. Slip rem 6 sts from heel onto beg of first needle. 18 sts on 1st needle, 24 sts on 2nd needle and 19 sts on 3rd needle.
1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 4 sts. K2tog. K2. 2nd needle: Knit. 3rd needle: K2. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to end of needle.
2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds to 49 sts.
Cont even until work from picked up sts measures 5 1/2 ins [14.5 cm], this should come to where your toes join your foot.
Next rnd: Knit, dec 1 st at center. 48 sts.

Creating toes: align sts onto 2 needles by knitting needle 1 onto needle 3, 24 on each.

Left Foot

Big Toe: Slip first 7 sts onto another needle and place remainder of the sts from 1st needle onto a stitch holder with opening towards the 7 sts.
Place all but last 7 sts of second needle onto a second stitch holder.  This will make it so the stitch holders open the same way, allowing you to slip the next set easily.
Divide these 14 sts onto 3 needles (5-4-5). 1st needle: knit. 2nd needle: K1, Ktfb, k2. 3rd needle: Knit. 15 sts total.
Knit for 18 rnds, cut yarn and draw through remaining sts. Weave in tail.

Second Toe: Pick up 2 sts from the base of the big toe (this helps prevent a hole) and pick up 5 from each stitch holder (these are the next sts if you were cont to work in rnd.)
Divide onto 3 needes (5 (the 2 picked up from the toe)-3-4). 1st needle: K2tog, Knit to end. 2nd needle: knit. 3rd needle: knit. 11 sts total.
Knit for 14 rnds, cut yarn and draw through remaining sts. Weave in tail.

Third Toe: Pick up 2 sts from the base of the second toe and pick up 4 from each stitch holder.
Divide onto 3 needles (3 (the 2 picked up from the toe)-3-4). 1st needle: Knit. 2nd needle: knit. 3rd needle: knit. 10 sts total.
Knit for 13 rnds, cut yarn and draw through remaining sts. Weave in tail.

Fourth Toe: Pick up 2 sts from the base of the third toe and pick up 4 from each stitch holder.
Divide onto 3 needes (3 (the 2 picked up from the toe)-3-4). 1st needle: Knit. 2nd needle: knit. 3rd needle: knit. 10 sts total.
Knit for 12 rnds, cut yarn and draw through remaining sts. Weave in tail.

Little Toe: Pick up 2 sts from the base of the fourth toe and pick up 4 from each stitch holder.
Divide onto 3 needles (3 (the 2 picked up from the toe)-3-4). 1st needle: Knit. 2nd needle: knit. 3rd needle: knit. 10 sts total.
Knit for 11 rnds, cut yarn and draw through remaining sts. Weave in tail.

Right Foot

Following the numbers for the right foot, reverse toes.  Start with little toe and work up to big toe.

Fun Foot Findings:
Try making every toe a different colour!
Or maybe us a self striping yarn or even Variegated yarn to create funky additions!
